John Flynn

John Flynn, Sales Engineer at Geokon, has an interesting sideline, that being a member of the United States Boomerang Team. John has been a member of four world champion teams representing the US in international competition, dating back to 1989 and most recently in 2002. He has demonstrated boomerangs at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC and achieved a number of world and national individual records. He was listed for a time in the Guinness Book of Records, as well as being featured in Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, and other national media. John has been selected as player-coach for the 2006 US Team that will travel to Hokkaido, Japan in July for the World Championships.

“The boomerangs we throw are not the aboriginal tools typically associated with Australia; we use specialized designs made from modern materials for various events that test accuracy, distance, freestyle catching, and maximum time aloft. Like golf, it’s an easy sport to begin, but more difficult to master. Reading the wind correctly, and selecting the appropriate boomerang, is the key strategy. It’s great exercise and has allowed me to visit parts of the world and meet people I otherwise never would have.”

John, a mechanical engineer by degree, joined Geokon in 1998. “At Geokon, I enjoy the work atmosphere as well as the support of a great group of people in our manufacturing disciplines. The customer’s needs are always different and our team can usually respond in a timely manner.”

“From the sales standpoint, it is satisfying to develop positive relationships with customers, help with their urgent needs, which can often save them large amounts of money, or contribute to the success of a project that may have been months, or years, in the making.”

When not at Geokon or involved with boomerangs, John enjoys skiing, sailing, and biking with his wife and twin sons.
