Model 8020-54 VW to Analog Converter

The Model 8020-54 Vibrating Wire (VW) to Analog Converter provides a simple way to connect Geokon VW sensors to data acquisition systems that either do not have the ability to read a frequency signal and/or lack the ability to generate the proper excitation.

Output from the Model 8020-54 is a 0-5 V or 4-20 mA signal. Minimum and maximum readings from each sensor are automatically scaled and sloped to provide their complete 0-5 V or 4-20 mA range and offer 16-bit resolution (1 part in 65536) with an accuracy of better than 0.1% (typical). In a similar fashion, temperature readings from the sensor’s thermistor are available with 10-bit resolution (1 part in 1024).

In addition to operating as a stand-alone, single-instrument device, the Model 8020-54 was developed with multiplexing in mind; it uses the same control signals as the Geokon Model 8032 Multiplexer. With a simple control program executed on the DAS, the Model 8020-54 can monitor up to 16 VW sensors with thermistors, or 32 VW sensors without. All settings for minimum and maximum limits for each channel are stored in internal EEPROM memory, requiring no backup battery, and can be retained for years.

Two user interfaces are provided, each with monitoring capability: a “Command Line” interface in the internal firmware, with a command set that allows all functions to be easily entered and calibrated, and a Windows® interface for more intuitive control (and storage in text file format of the various settings and information for each sensor).

The Model 8020-54 is powered from 12 V (nominal) and draws approximately 40 mA when taking readings. When it is “shut-off” or between scans during multiplexing, the total current consumption is less than 100 micro amps. An optional 24 V DC-DC converter is available to allow powering from a standard 24 V 4-20 mA current loop. A standard 9-pin RS-232 Serial Port is provided for communication with most IBM PC compatible desktop and laptop computers. An optional USB interface is also available.
