In early 1998, GEOKON supplied 172 Model 4900 Vibrating Wire Load Cells for the construction of the Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi USA, on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. The cells monitor the load of the large casino floor on support barges submerged in seawater, as the casino, by law, could not be constructed on the land.

In late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Biloxi coastline, with its maximum storm surge forcing the sea to 15 feet above the casino floor, and 35 feet above its normal level, ruining the gaming areas and damaging the substructure. GEOKON was called to the casino site to determine if the load cells were functional despite the submersion, and if those not suffering physical damage were okay. However, resulting load imbalances eventually required that the cells be replaced in 2008 and reinstalled with new bearing plates.

GEOKON Sales Engineer, John Flynn, recently attended a trade conference at Beau Rivage, and was allowed to inspect the array of load cells underneath the casino floor. Their Engineering staff continues to take periodic readings of the load cells and they return their VW Readouts to GEOKON for periodic calibration. With most of the cells nearing 10 years of operation just above a saline environment, they are coping very well and can likely be counted on for many more years of good service.
