Landfills

    Overview

Environmental concerns, requiring a knowledge of groundwater levels and the stability of landfills, have been extensively monitored using GEOKON instrumentation. In these often highly corrosive regimes, special instruments, capable of withstanding elevated temperatures and aggressive leachates, have been constructed from titanium for added reliability and longevity. The Staten Island Landfill in New Jersey is instrumented with GEOKON sensors.

The Geotechnical Department of the Doña Juana Landfill highlights the fundamental role that GEOKON instrumentation has played in strengthening their geotechnical monitoring system:

    1. The GK‑406 VW Analyzer was used to quickly and accurately verify the performance of sensors installed in the field.
    2. The 4500 vibrating wire piezometers, inclinometers, and multiple point extensometers formed the basis for monitoring pore water pressure, internal deformations, and deep settlements—all critical variables for landfill stability and geotechnical risk management.
    3. The 8800 Series data loggers have been essential for continuous and reliable data acquisition, enabling automated, high‑resolution temporal records.
    4. Additionally, the use of GEOKON Agent and the GEOKON API has allowed seamless integration, visualization, and management of the data, optimizing analysis and supporting the generation of timely, robust technical reports.

The combination of these instruments and platforms has increased the precision of their monitoring, improved operational decision‑making, and strengthened technical confidence with regulatory authorities. For these reasons, the Geotechnical Department of the Doña Juana Landfill considers their implementation a success case within their operation.
